Matt Hasselbeck’s hyperextended right knee would not allow him to practice Friday, and he likely will not play against the Packers on Sunday. That leave’s No. 3 QB Charlie Fye to make his first start for the Seahawks.

No place like home for Hawks
The Seahawks have the best home record in the NFC since 2003 at 34-8, way ahead of Dallas (27-16). But Seattle has just the seventh-best road results during that span at 18-24 and Mike Holmgren continues searching for the reason why.

Hasselbeck likely out for Seattle (AP)
Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck served as spectator all week during practice. He’ll likely reprise that role Sunday for the Seahawks (1-3). Hasselbeck’s sore right knee hasn’t received clearance to play against Green Bay, meaning that Charlie Frye will likely be the starter against the Packers, coach Mike Holmgren said after practice Friday.

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck did not practice, and coach Mike Holmgren said it looks like Charlie Frye will play in the game. Hasselbeck’s knee continues to be sore, and Holmgren indicated that it will be a game-time decision whether he could play, but did not seem overly optimistic.
Seneca Wallace was on the field for practice in a limited capacity. Holmgren said it’s unlikely Wallace would be available to start.
In other news, Holmgren indicated that Bobby Engram and Koren Robinson are likely to start at wide receiver.

The NFL did not administer a fine for Giants’ defensive tackle Fred Robbins’ hit on Matt Hasselbeck in the first quarter of Sunday’s loss. Hasselbeck was hit after releasing the ball, but coach Mike Holmgren and Hasselbeck each said it was a close play. There was no penalty on the play during the game and no fine.
Also, cornerback Josh Wilson was not fined for his second-quarter hit on Domenik Hixon, which knocked the Giants receiver out of the game with a concussion.

With the Seattle Seahawks mired at 1-3 and coach Mike Holmgren feeling the need to make some decisions that will both shake up the mindset and get the attention of players, he will make some personnel changes this week when the Seahawks host the Green Bay Packers, themselves losers of three straight.
It appears as if Holmgren will make one change on each side of the ball, with Koren Robinson getting the opportunity to start at split end while Josh Wilson may get more time at cornerback in place of Kelly Jennings.
The Seahawks have had a horrific time at wide receiver this season, and with Deion Branch getting hurt last week - he’s out indefinitely with a heel injury—it opens up an opportunity for somebody else.

It hasn’t necessarily been easy, but Doug Farrar has managed to keep up with the big ugly numbers getting hung on the board against Seattle’s defense. And Farrar doesn’t need to stay at a Holiday Inn Express to know what he’s talking about. He’s one of The Football Outsiders, the sharp-minded folks who put together the Football Prospectus, essential reading for anyone who wants to look inside the stats that get recited on a weekly basis.
You can click here for a biography and a nifty little drawing of Doug on the staff page at Football Outsiders. Again, a tip of the cap to Doug — to borrow a phrase from the baseball clubhouse:

| DVOA: It stands for Defense-adjusted Value Over Average, and it’s easier to explain than to pronounce. It is a percentage that evaluates a team’s success on a given play compared to the league average. It does not evaluate total yards or average production, but rather if the play was successful (i.e. did it put the team in position for a first down). Gaining 7 yards on third-and-8 is not successful. Remember, DVOA is a percentage. Zero percent is average, 10 percent is 10 percent larger than average and -10 percent is 10 percent less than average. A positive DVOA percentage is good on offense, bad on defense. That’s a simplified explanation. | ||||||||||
| DAVE (DVOA Adjusted for Variation Early). This formula combines VOA and the FO preseason projections. For Week 2, DAVE consists of 75 percent projection, 25 percent 2008 data. | ||||||||||

Packers’ quarterback Rodgers follows in Favre’s often painful footsteps
His predecessor hadn’t missed a start since 1992 with the Green Bay Packers, so don’t expect quarterback Aaron Rodgers to ask out of Sunday’s showdown with the Seahawks at Qwest Field despite a sprained shoulder.

This is Jose. I just thought I would give this entry a catchy title. It is true, the Seahawks special teams coach did play that instrument as a younger man.
DeHaven was asked about the Seahawks return game, and whether he’s getting what he wants out of Michael Bumpus and Josh Wilson.
He chose not to comment in great deal on it nor offer evaluations of individuals, which suggested his dissatisfaction with that part of the Seahawks’ game.
“We’re not doing well enough,” DeHaven said. “We need to be better. We’ve improved game to game but still not enough.”
Bumpus is averaging 9.4 yards per punt return, 14th in the league. Wilson is 24th in kickoff returns with a 23-yard average.
October 9th, 2008 | Seattle Seahawks Football | 0 comments | ContinuedMatt Hasselbeck still watching practice
Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck did not practice for the second consecutive day, which is not a shock. Coach Mike Holmgren was non-committal when asked about Hasselbeck’s availability earlier this week. Hasselbeck is recovering from a knee injury.
The Seahawks did sign Charlie Frye some help, bringing in Travis Lulay, who attended training camp with the team in 2006. Lulay is living in Bozeman, Mont., and he was out at a steakhouse in Manhattan, Mont., which might be among the most misleading town names in the country given that this Manhattan has only a couple thousand people.
But Lulay took scout-team repetitions, meaning Frye didn’t have to throw all the passes in practice as he did on Wednesday.
Seneca Wallace and Deion Branch were the other Seahawks who did not practice. Linebacker Leroy Hill was back for the entire practice and Koren Robinson also completed the practice. That means Robinson is a step closer to playing this week. He practiced fully on Wednesday last week, but sat out the next two workouts because of a sore knee. The fact that Robinson practiced without limitation is a positive sign in the sense that he may be ready to go.
October 9th, 2008 | Seattle Seahawks Football | 0 comments | ContinuedJustin Forsett, Travis Lulay signed to practice squad
Running back Justin Forsett was signed to Seattle’s practice squad, which consists of eight players signed by the team and one international prospect allotted by the league [José Miguel Romero accurately pointed out it is not an eight-man practice squad for Seattle this season because of the inclusion of Samuel Gutekunst]. Forsett replaces Matt Lawrence. Quarterback Travis Lulay was signed to the practice squad and wide receiver Trent Shelton was replaced.
Forsett was one of the team’s seventh-round draft picks, and made Seattle’s 53-man roster [José pointed out Forsett was one of two second-round picks. Kicker Brandon Coutu was also drafted int he seventh round]. He was released from the roster the second week as Seattle suffered an injury crisis at wide receiver. The Colts signed him and played the next game, but was released by Indianapolis this week.
Lulay was in the Seahawks training camp in 2006. He was signed to play scout-team quarterback with the Seahawks after Seattle was down to one quarterback practicing on Wednesday because of injuries to Matt Hasselbeck and Seneca Wallace.

Matt Hasselbeck wore a black legging on his right leg and a baseball cap as he watched Wednesday’s practice. Seneca Wallace was out with an injured calf. That left No. 5, Charlie Frye, to make all of the throws for both the first-unit offense and the scout team during Wednesday’s practice.
Here’s some footage from the start of practice with audio commentary from coach Mike Holmgren on his team’s quarterback situation:

Holmgren goes off on sagging Seahawks (AP)
So much for a soft, sentimental ride through Mike Holmgren’s 10th and final season as Seahawks coach. The paternal yet often fiery Holmgren ripped into his players during what he called “a truth session” on Wednesday, three days after Seattle (1-3) was embarrassed 44-6 at the New York Giants. It was the worst margin of defeat in Holmgren’s head coaching career, which began in Green Bay in 1992.
October 8th, 2008 | Seattle Seahawks Football | 0 comments | ContinuedJosh Wilson working more at right cornerback
Josh Wilson will work more with the first-unit defense this week in practice in place of Kelly Jennings, one of the personnel changes coach Mike Holmgren intimated might be coming this week.
“You’ll see Josh playing some at the corner position,” Holmgren said. “That’s one of the things we’ve maneuvered just a little bit more.”
Wilson, a second-round pick in 2007, began the season as Seattle’s nickelback. He could start at right cornerback in place of Jennings, who suffered a broken rib in the second game of the season and then a concussion after he was on the field for seven plays.
Jennings could still play in nickel packages. At that point he would play right cornerback and Wilson would move to defend an interior receiver.
