Bell takes call to tailback duty for Broncos (AP)

Thrown out of work in Detroit, tailback Tatum Bell was studying cell phone rate plans rather than a play book. After his unceremonious release by the Lions in September, Bell was hired as a manager to run a T-Mobile kiosk inside a Denver area mall. There, in a tiny booth located just across from the Disney Store, Bell waited for a second chance, not really expecting one anytime soon.

DOVE VALLEY — The Broncos began preparation for Sunday’s must-win game at San Diego without two offensive starters.

Broncos sign running back reinforcements (AP)

The reinforcements have arrived in the Denver Broncos’ battered backfield: Cory Boyd and Alex Haynes, both of whom were recently cut by the team. The Broncos needed them back after losing Selvin Young (back) and P.J. Pope (hamstring) to season-ending injuries Sunday against Buffalo. They are the sixth and seventh tailbacks the Broncos have had to place on injured reserve this season.

Broncos on brink of colossal collapse (AP)

A dismal December has the Denver Broncos on the brink of a colossal collapse. Not since division play began in 1967 has a team held a three-game lead with three weeks to go and failed to make the playoffs. The Broncos (8-7) have led the woeful AFC West by themselves for four months, but they will miss the postseason party altogether with a loss Sunday night at San Diego, which began the month 4-8.

Where’s Hochuli? Not at Broncos-Chargers (AP)

Looking for Ed Hochuli to work another Denver-San Diego game, this one with the AFC West title on the line? Forget it. Hochuli, whose blunder helped decide the first game between the Broncos and Chargers — in favor of Denver — will be a couple thousand miles east in Green Bay on Sunday for the Lions-Packers game, where Detroit will be trying to avoid the first 0-16 season in NFL history.

Reeling Broncos try to regroup from two-game slide (AP)

Tatum Bell didn’t talk to anyone the rest of the night. Brandon Stokley lost sleep thinking of the catches he couldn’t quite snare. Even Monday, the bewildered Denver Broncos were still agitated over letting a chance to capture the mediocre AFC West slip away with a 30-23 loss to Buffalo. Now, they’re trying to salve their psyche in time for their all-or-nothing game at San Diego on Sunday night.

Broncos-Bills pregame notes

INVESCO FIELD — Greetings from a very chilly Invesco Field.
First things first: Champ Bailey is back in uniform for the Broncos, for the first time since he partially tore his groin on Oct. 20. Seeing No. 24 back on the field is about the best news the Broncos could hope for.
Injured offensive linemen [...]

Broncos plan to go without a fullback (AP)

The Denver Broncos planned to go without a fullback for the second straight week with Spencer Larsen and Andrew Pinnock both inactive for Sunday’s game against Buffalo. Larsen has been hampered by a groin injury but was expected to be activated against the Bills. Last week at Carolina, coach Mike Shanahan explained that he had to deactivate Pinnock with Larsen sidelined because he needed two…

Broncos’ Bell a corner who wants to be a chemist (AP)

Broncos rookie Josh Bell is a cornerback who aspires to one day be a chemist. Naturally he takes a scientific approach to his play, as if it were a lab experiment. Through trial and error, Bell has concocted a fruitful formula as he fills in for Champ Bailey, who’s sidelined by a torn groin and listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against Buffalo.

Plea hearing delayed for suspect in Williams death (AP)

The man accused of killing Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams will enter a plea in February after Friday’s hearing was postponed. Willie D. Clark faces 39 counts, including first-degree murder. His plea hearing was postponed until Feb. 20 because his attorneys wanted more time to review evidence.

Broncos talk Pro Bowl

DOVE VALLEY — The Pro Bowl teams were announced Tuesday — the players’ day off — so naturally who made it, and who didn’t, was a hot topic in the locker room on Wednesday as the Broncos started practicing to get ready for Sunday’s basically must-win game against Buffalo.

Buffalo QB update: Edwards or … Hamdan?

DOVE VALLEY — Buffalo coach Dick Jauron said Wednesday morning that his quarterback, Trent Edwards, took some snaps today for the first time since injurying his groin against San Francisco two games ago.
The team is hopeful Edwards will be able to start, but Jauron said that if Edwards can’t go — and those of us [...]

DOVE VALLEY — Three key offensive players were missing from Broncos’ practice late Wednesday morning — the team’s first session in preparation for the Buffalo game this Sunday.

Shanahan still has faith in slumping kicker Prater (AP)

Matt Prater hasn’t lost his sense of humor — and Broncos coach Mike Shanahan hasn’t lost his faith in his slumping kicker. Prater is a perfect 5-for-5 beyond 50 yards but just 4-of-10 on field goal attempts between 40 and 49 yards and hasn’t been the same kicker over the second half of the season. “Maybe I should ask next time if we go out for a 48, ‘Do you mind if we back it up three yards?”‘…

Broncos’ O-line hasn’t allowed sack in 3 games (AP)

In this Dec. 7, 2008 file photo, Denver Broncos rookie offensive guard Ryan Clady looks on during the fourth quarter of the Broncos' 24-17 victory in an NFL football game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Denver. Clady shies away from the spotlight, scramming when the cameras come too close. That pretty much holds true for the rest of the Broncos offensive line as well. They don't seek attention, preferring to be left alone to quietly go about their business of keeping Jay Cutler safe and secure.
