Indianapolis’ season ended the same way it started. The defense couldn’t get off the field, the offense couldn’t run the ball and there were too many penalties. It wasn’t the closing chapter Tony Dungy or Peyton Manning scripted after what may have been their most rewarding NFL regular season together.

Once again, I want to hear team president Bill Polian go on his radio show and say it: “We can run the football when we have to run it.” Really? Like on third-and-short? Like fourth-and-short? Like . . . EVER? Before the playoffs, I felt the Colts’ lack of a running game eventually would catch up with them, maybe in the second or third round, probably during a bad-weather game. Instead, it bit them in the first round. They were such a wretched running team this year, when it came down to that third-and-2 at their own 9-yard line late in regulation, they emptied the backfield and didn’t even give the impression they were going to run. This was an offensively one-dimensional team all season.

SAN DIEGO — A season-long predilection for tight games and fourth-quarter drama failed the Indianapolis Colts on a cool, cloudy Saturday evening at Qualcomm Stadium. They blew a fourth-quarter lead for the first time since September and lost 23-17 in overtime to the San Diego Chargers in an AFC wild-card game.
