Steelers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, the AFC Offensive Player of the Week, did not practice with his teammates during their bye week.

All’s well in Pittsburgh, though, or at least most of them are getting to that point, including Roethlisberger.

Big Ben has had a sore right shoulder—technically a slight separation—since Houston defensive end Mario Williams sacked him and he landed on it in the opener. He has not missed a game because of it, but he has missed a number of practices. Roethlisberger did not practice last Wednesday or Thursday, then came out and threw the ball a season-high 41 times for 309 yards and three touchdowns to beat the Jaguars in Jacksonville, 26-21.

The shoulder took another hit as he completed a crucial 18-yard pass to Hines…

Steelers safety Clark’s career nearly vanished (AP)

In this Aug. 28, 2008 file photo, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark (25) looks on during preseason NFL football action against the Carolina Panthers in Pittsburgh. The Steelers safety never saw the problem that felled him nearly a year ago, ended his season and caused him to lose so much weight his teammates wondered if he could recover.

Ryan Clark’s life was upended on a football field, and not because of a big hit, a bad knee or a damaged hamstring. The Pittsburgh Steelers safety never saw the problem that felled him nearly a year ago, ended his season and caused him to lose so much weight his teammates wondered if he could recover.

Steelers kicker Reed’s groin injury not serious (AP)

Steelers kicker Jeff Reed probably won’t miss any games because of a groin injury he sustained in a win over Jacksonville on Sunday night. Pittsburgh (4-1) is off this week, and Reed said Tuesday he should be fine for the Oct. 19 game at Cincinnati. Reed could have attempted a field goal during the Steelers’ final possession if necessary, coach Mike Tomlin said.

Big Ben withstands blitzes, bad shoulder for win (AP)

Never before had the Pittsburgh Steelers done this: ask Ben Roethlisberger to win a game virtually by himself. They always had Jerome Bettis, Willie Parker or Hines Ward, a line led by All-Pro guard Alan Faneca, and one of the NFL’s best defenses to take the pressure off their quarterback. Win the game?

Steelers beat Jaguars 26-21 (AP)

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, right, grimaces in pain and is helped down the field by teammate Willie Colon during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game, Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, in Jacksonville, Fla. Pittsburg won 26-21.

Ben Roethlisberger had Reggie Hayward draped on his back one play and John Henderson breathing down his neck a few snaps later. Either one could have been a sack. Both almost were. But Big Ben turned them into big completions, maybe the highlights of his big night that gave the Pittsburgh Steelers a big boost in the AFC North.

Ward: Jags shouldn’t expect Steelers to air it out (AP)

No Willie Parker, no Rashard Mendenhall — and, even if they were healthy, no fullback to block for them. Wide receiver Hines Ward knows what everybody suspects the beaten-up Pittsburgh Steelers will do Sunday night in Jacksonville without their top two running backs. Namely, ask Ben Roethlisberger to beat the Jaguars with his arm.

Leftwich: Steelers always a big deal to Jaguars (AP)

Byron Leftwich feels so different wearing Steelers black and gold rather than Jaguars teal and black for one of the AFC’s best rivalry games, he called former teammate Marcus Stroud to ask, “Hey, did you feel this way, too?” Like Leftwich, Stroud was a longtime Jaguars player who also needed to shift loyalties after going to Buffalo.

Parker still out, so Steelers look for RB help (AP)

The Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t been this thin at running back since losing 1,000-yard rushers Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier to injuries before the 1976 AFC championship game. With Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall injured and out, the division-leading Steelers are down to one healthy running back for Sunday night’s key AFC game in Jacksonville — Mewelde Moore, who had only one carry in their…

Steelers rookie RB calm even as Ravens await (AP)

Rashard Mendenhall probably has a thousand reasons why he should be nervous and hesitant about making his first NFL start Monday night against Baltimore. Three of them are the fumbles he had during the Pittsburgh Steelers’ final two exhibition games — the fumbles that prompted his teammates to make him carry a ball everywhere he went the following week.
