It’s all in the name for Jets coach Eric Mangini
When Eric Mangini sat before Brett Favre this summer, the Jets head coach threw in one unexpected and unorthodox perk for the quarterback. Mangini told Favre he was was expecting their third son and that he wanted his son’s middle name to be Brett.

There’s a new Brett in Eric Mangini’s life. Zack Brett Mangini was born early Friday — also Brett Favre’s 39th birthday — and the New York Jets coach and his wife, Julie, gave their third son a middle name fit for an iconic, gunslinging quarterback. “I think he thinks it’s pretty cool,” Mangini said of Favre.

Eric Mangini’s opening statement to reporters Wednesday was a focused monologue on all of the many and varied strengths of upcoming opponent Cincinnati in which he made the Bengals sound like an amalgamation of the 1978 Steelers, 1985 Bears and 2004 Patriots.
Never mind that Cincinnati actually is 0-5 and off to its worst start since the 2002 squad went 0-7 en route to a 2-14 campaign.
“Looking at the Bengals,” Mangini said, “it’s pretty easy to see all the positive things that they do. They’ve lost to teams that have a combined record of 16-6. They scored the most points anybody has against the Giants, put them into overtime and played tough against Dallas in a tough situation.

On Sunday, the Jets will face the Bengals’ Chad Ocho Cinco, but the more pressing issue is Ocho Tres - the number of points they have allowed over the last two games. The last time the Jets surrendered as many as 83 points in back-to-back games was 1986.
Brett Favre foundation is built on Bengals
On Sunday, the Jets face the Bengals, the team that started it all for Brett Favre in 1992. In his first significant NFL regular-season action, Favre, replaced an injured Don Majkowski and rallied them to a 24-23 victory over Cincinnati at Lambeau.

Vernon Gholston used some of the down time during the New York Jets’ bye week to catch up on some heavy reading. The telephone directory-sized defensive playbook has been a constant companion for the rookie outside linebacker, who’s still trying to learn the Jets’ complex system. “I just looked over the plays that I’ve had and kind of evaluate myself a little bit, see the things I need to do better…

After a few hours out on the practice field, Brett Favre really gets to work in a crowded meeting room in the New York Jets’ training facility. The quarterback sits in on the wide receiver and tight end position meetings throughout the week as he and the group continue to build chemistry. There’s questions, suggestions and lots of light moments.

The mix of Brett Favre and Laveranues Coles, the Jets’ two biggest playmakers on offense, has to be right if the Jets are going to make a playoff run. The game against the Cardinals was the first display of chemistry developing.
Favre’s class act a big hit
Every day after practice, Brett Favre and his wide receivers repair a classroom at the Jets’ facility. They turn down the lights and turn up the conversation, engaging in a strategic crossfire as they study themselves on the practice tape.

Jet Favre is Super to Namath
Joe Namath turned off the game at the start of the 3rd quarter, when Brett Favre was up to 3 touchdown passes. With his Jets comfortably ahead, Namath felt it was safe to leave, never thinking history was going to be made.
Jets bye into Eric’s ways
Continuing what he began at the start of training camp, Eric Mangini isn’t killing the team with long and taxing practices. Even last week, he held back during the bye week, according to players, who said it will pay physical and emotional dividends.

Kerry Rhodes picked up a roll of black tape and took a jump shot that clanged off the locker room ceiling. The New York Jets safety ran over to the makeshift ball, picked it up and took another shot that sailed past the garbage can. Eric Barton and Darrelle Revis were soon at it, too, laughing and trying to swat away each other’s shots.

Titans, Colts staged stunning rallies (AP)
The Titans were beaten for the first time. The Colts were headed for a 1-3 start. Not so fast. Thanks to a stunning rally, Tennessee edged Baltimore 13-10 in a brutally physical and penalty-filled game Sunday. Then Indianapolis, helped greatly by gifts from Houston, topped the Titans’ comeback with an even more improbably turnaround for a 31-27 victory.
