After Eric Mangini was given his walking papers Monday, the two men who made that decision stated emphatically that they wanted 39-year-old quarterback Brett Favre to return to the Jets.

Interesting, considering Favre, like Mangini, certainly was culpable in the Jets’ 1-4 finish that cost them what seemed to be a sure playoff berth.

“I hope so,” team owner Woody Johnson said when asked if he expected Favre to be back in 2009, adding that he hadn’t spoken with the quarterback about his future plans. “I just think he adds a lot to the team that’s positive.”

“We as an organization want Brett back,” general manager Mike Tannenbaum said. “I think that will unfold over the days and weeks from now.”

It’s possible the Jets are merely keeping the door open while…
