Texans Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Coach Gary Kubiak started his intense scrutiny of himself and his staff on Monday. By two days after the end of the season, he decided to make changes by firing defensive coordinator Richard Smith, defensive backs coach Jon Hoke and defensive line coach Jethro Franklin.

The Texans finished 22nd in defense this season, including 23rd against the run and 17th against the pass. They also were 27th in points allowed. Their struggles in the first half of the season were a major reason for the team not being in playoff contention down the stretch.

Linebacker DeMeco Ryans said he was glad his position coach, Johnny Holland, will be remaining with the team, but he added it’s tough to see the others he had respect for, like Smith, leave.

But they were so bad early on against the Chicago Bears that the problem - which dogged them for much of the season - was starting to appear moot.

Texans Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

One day after the Texans ended the regular season with a victory over Chicago to finish 8-8 for the second consecutive season, coach Gary Kubiak refused to discuss possible changes on his coaching staff.

“I’ve been meeting with players since 6 this morning,” Kubiak said. “We’re still going through the evaluation process.”

Kubiak said he would like to have back assistant head coach Alex Gibbs, who came out of retirement and signed a one-year contract. Gibbs will let Kubiak know at some point if he wants to return for a second season. Kubiak said he expects to have back Ray Rhodes, the assistant secondary coach who tutored the safeties.

Beginning Sunday - even before the Texans defeated Chicago 31-24 - there were national reports that the defensive staff,…

Johnson, Texans end Chicago’s season, 31-24 (AP)

Chicago Bears defensive end Adewale Ogunleye (93) sits on the bench during the closing minutes of the fourth quarter of an NFL football game against the Houston Texans on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, in Houston. The Texans beat the Bears 31-24.

Faced with one last chance to make the playoffs, the Chicago Bears blew it. Andre Johnson had two touchdowns and the Houston Texans got a 31-24 win over the Bears on Sunday to knock them out of the playoff picture. The Bears (9-7) needed a win to keep any postseason hopes alive. The Vikings beat the Giants to take the NFC North title; Chicago could have still got into the wild-card spot, but needed…

Mario Williams leaves game with strained groin (AP)

Houston defensive end Mario Williams left Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears with a strained groin. The 6-foot-7, 291-pound Williams came up limping on the third play of the second half, after Dominique Barber sacked Kyle Orton. Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 draft, sacked Orton earlier and has 12 on the season.

Bears’ hopes alive as they prepare for Texans

Finally, the Houston Texans are playing a meaningful game in late December.

The problem is it’s only meaningful to the Chicago Bears, still in playoff contention thanks to a big overtime win on Monday.

Even with a win over Houston, getting to the playoffs will be difficult. To win the NFC North the Bears need Minnesota to lose to or tie the New York Giants, who with a playoff spot secure may rest some starters. Chicago could also get in with a wild-card spot, but needs losses or ties by Dallas and Tampa Bay to qualify that way.
